Dan Woodruff – My story
“Woodruff Financial Planning has a vision of how financial services should be provided.”
Life can change at any minute
I can still clearly remember the day when my whole perspective on life changed. I was 16 years old. I was watching my team play in the FA Cup semi-final: Spurs v Arsenal. It was the first semi-final to be played at Wembley. Gazza scored an amazing free kick, and Spurs won the game to continue to the final. I should have been delighted, but it hardly registered with me.
That’s because my mum came home to tell us that she had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She was 35 years old.
Until that moment, I’d never heard of the illness. But I knew that everything would change for us from then on. I just held her hand and told her that I’d be there for her, no matter what.
Being talented is not enough
I did well at school so it was natural for me to go to university. After training to be a solicitor I thought that a good education would be enough to guarantee success in life. It wasn’t enough because life is never that simple. I left university with a good education, a lot of debt and no job. So I changed direction and spent 7 years building my skills in the financial sector, working for 2 leading insurance companies.
I wasn’t content working in large organisations, as their direction and values didn’t match mine. So I set up Woodruff Financial Planning in 2003. I thought that there was a gap open for a more professional financial advice service.
You owe it to yourself to make the most of your life
My mum died suddenly when she was 50 and I was 31. I had seen her illness progress over 15 years to change her completely from the person I knew. Her illness had taken its toll and life had been hard for her.
This made me realise that life is very short. We don’t know what is in the future, so we’d better make sure we make the most of it, while we still can.
Live your dreams
I realised that people like you don’t care about financial products. What you really care about is whether you and your family can do what you want with your life. You want to live your dreams; the money just makes it happen.
Now I help my clients get to financial independence. This is having the ability to choose to stop work if that’s what you want. If you are confident you have enough money to guarantee a secure future then you can focus on making the most of the rest of your life. That’s financial planning.
Now I focus on making dreams happen for my clients and I can’t think of a better job for me. Every day I get to help people to get the future they want. They can therefore focus on the more important things:
If you work with us we’ll give you the confidence to make important decisions about your future, and show you the implications of those decisions. We’ll also encourage you to make the most of your life.
